Mandarin Chinese Travel Phrases

You have read this far, it means you already know the Chinese language basics. Its history, pronunciation, how to read and write pinyin, you have even learned a few characters, numbers... Now, here is the final step. Start talking! This is a small collection of Chinese basic phrases used very frequently. Check the pinyin pages again if you need to remember the pronunciation, and don't be afraid, just practice!

If you travel, remember that the language variant people speak might be different depending on the city you are visiting. Pronunciation varies especially in Cantonese. One thing about the standardized simplified characters is that no matter what dialect is spoken, the characters are the same ones, so if you are ever in trouble, just show the written words to anyone and they will help you out. 1. This expression literally means "Are you good?". It is used to say "Hello" and at the same time it means "How are you?", so the expected answer is "I am well."
